A subset of children with autism are given a clinical diagnosis of PANS or PANDAS. PANS stands for Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome. PANDAS is a Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder associated with Streptococcal Infections. This disorder involves antibodies from a strep infection reacting with brain tissue. It is a common autoimmune disorder affecting behavioral, and cognitive function. This disorder manifests in the form of compulsive rituals (OCD), tics, hyperactivity, anxiety, irritability, depression and more. Symptoms are often exacerbated when the individual is re-exposed to the virus/infection, causing a “flare”. It is treated with long term antibiotics, steroids, immune supporting therapies and sometimes prescription drugs. More Information can be found at the following websites: TACAnow.org Age of Autism
I am a busy mom of 3 children who is trying to achieve a healthy lifestyle for my family. I research biomedical treatments to alleviate symptoms experienced by my autistic son and wish to share my research with others.
